Why San Franciscans need dogs

A friend was visiting from Central Africa, and he noticed the following on Bernal Hill: everyone has a dog that they treat like a human. And people who have dogs talk to each other. People who don't have dogs don't speak to each other. It's like people need the dogs in order to initiate interaction, he says.

Which I think is a scary thought, because that means we're all scare-y.
